Frequently Asked Questions
What is Cooking Club? Cooking Club is an eight session food and nutrition literacy program for children 8-13 years old. This "curriculum in a box" includes everything you will need to implement engaging hands-on activities, with opportunities for children to learn culinary skills, kitchen science, nutrition, food origins and more! Each session focuses upon a selected theme and recipe that encourages children to explore, prepare and taste healthful foods.
What activities will children participate in during this program? In each session of Cooking Club children explore the individual ingredients in a recipe, learn about the nutritious aspects of the dish, and then prepare the recipe to share with their friends. Each one-hour session focuses upon a selected theme and recipe that encourages children to explore, prepare and taste healthful foods.
Where can Cooking Club be implemented? The program is designed for all camp programs operated by community centers, schools, and other community-based organizations. Programs may be taught by a teacher, instructor, camp counselor, group leader, site coordinator, or by those who are responsible for working with groups of children at yours organization.
What age group is recommended for this program? Cooking Club can be adapted to work with most age groups, although younger children will need more adult direction and support. In some cases, older children in Leaders-in-Training programs have worked with younger students after participating in their own Cooking Club sessions. Training and materials include suggestions for how to adapt the program for different age children.
How is Cooking Club implemented? Program sessions can be implemented according to the needs and schedule of your program. Some sites choose to teach classes once a week for 8 consecutive weeks, others implement the program monthly or bi-monthly over a longer period of time. The Cooking Club Curriculum Guide will provide your staff with all the information needed to implement the program on their own.
What materials are included with the program? Your purchase of Cooking Club includes all of the lessons and materials that your staff will need to implement the program. (Sites provide food for lessons and paper goods). Materials include:
- Cooking Club Curriculum: Implementation guide, session plans and background information for instructors, program template materials (parent letters, handouts for kids, etc.), food and supply lists, and other lesson-related materials.
- Food Explorer Cooking Kit: Cutting Mats, Child Safe Chef Knives, Measuring Cups, Measuring Spoons, Carrying Bag
What other materials or site requirements do we need to implement this program? Some lessons require the use of an oven, stove or electric pan or burner. Sites will also have minimal costs associated with food and paper goods.
Can we implement it with more than one group/location? YES! Once you receive curriculum materials, you are free to implement it with all groups and locations associated with your program. The Food Explorer Cooking Kit has enough reuseable cooking tools for 1 class of 25 students.
What is the cost of the program? $350.00 per Spoons Cooking Club Curriculum Guide and Food Explorer Kit.
